It's 2 a.m. Do You Know How Much Energy You're Wasting?
Author: Mandeep Khera, VP Marketing and Channels, Daintree Networks

Did you know that by using simple software and wireless technology, you can save 70 percent or more in building energy costs and eliminate millions of metric tons in carbon emissions? While there continues to be much discussion around ways to leverage alternative energy sources (such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric) we might not need them if we can truly focus on saving energy first.

A bold claim? Not according to noted author, lecturer and social critic James Howard Kunstler: "We're not going to be rescued by alternative fuels. No amount or combination of alternative fuels is going to allow us to continue running what we're running the way we're running it." In other words, it's not enough to keep looking for alternative sources if we aren't going to focus on what we can do that's right in front of us -- and that is to simply use less energy.

Energy conservation is more important now than ever before, as increasingly stringent versions of government standards related to energy management and usage reduction – e.g., ASHRAE 90.1 and California's Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards – come into play. According to McKinsey & Company, buildings alone account for nearly 25 percent of the investment required to achieve full global greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement potential by 2030, providing further impetus for architects, building planners and facilities managers to make energy management a key component of new and retrofit installations.

Using technology to manage energy usage in buildings can also provide operational efficiencies that help reduce business risk through fault detection and proactive maintenance. And, technology has gotten a lot simpler with easy-to-use open standards-driven software and networked wireless solutions to control and manage most energy devices in a building.

Building energy management is the most critical piece of the Enterprise Internet of Things (E-IoT). So, using the right open standards-driven technology, not only organizations can start saving energy, they can get a jump start on their E-IoT initiatives to manage all machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.

However, despite the tremendous energy savings, improved efficiencies in business operations, positive corporate citizenship with reduction in carbon emissions, and code compliance, most companies are not taking advantage of basic technologies, such as LEDs andwireless sensors and controls. According to some estimates, LED installations are still below 10 percent of the installed base, and the installation rate for networked wireless solutions for energy control and management is a great deal lower.

Daintree Networks is committed to helping commercial facilities achieve their energy usage goals by offering a simple solution that serves as the foundation for creating a smart-building roadmap that can achieve dramatic savings from lighting, HVAC and plug-load control – not to mention some less obvious benefits. Deployed in facilities of all sizes across North America, Daintree's ControlScope™ solution offers an open standards-driven architecture that provides a simple, easy-to-use technology for controlling lighting, thermostats, plug-loads, fans and many more functions with data analytics.

So, why is it that companies are still not embracing these types of "killer apps" and using today's technologies to realize all these benefits and maximize energy savings? Perhaps you can tell us! We invite you to contribute to this discussion through our industry survey Link, which is designed to find more about the state of building energy management today – and to help increase awareness of this phenomenon that could shape the future of our energy landscape.

What Are Your Competitors Doing?
Author: Darlene Pope, President & CEO, CoR Advisors

What are your competitors doing? Good question. I'll make a deal with you… I'll tell you what everyone else is doing if you tell me what you're doing. CoR Advisors has set up a brief industry survey on current trends and technology applications that we'd like to you complete. It only takes about 4-5 minutes (really), but it will provide invaluable information about the state of the industry in terms of its knowledge and application of today's technologies. We'll send you a summary of the survey results and also report them live on our webcast on August 15. We will also be selecting several survey participants to join the webcast to represent the "voice of the customer". You game?

Also, to thank you for your time, the first 50 responses will receive a free copy of "Creating Climate Wealth" by Jigar Shah. You will also be entered into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire HDX7! So… all that for filling out a simple survey. Please take a moment to participate – we literally can't do it without your input. Thank you!
